Karaoke Singing
Banned in Atlanta, Georgia Suburb of Lilburn. Lawyer: Songs and Laughter Banned, Too
Tuesday, March 6, 2007
In Lilburn, Georgia, aspiring crooners won’t sing off key anymore.
Because of the town’s ban on karaoke, any drunken warbling could get lounge owners fined, says an Atlanta Journal-Constitution story printed Tuesday (March 6, 2007).

“Our intention was always to just have alcohol in restaurants,” Lilburn Mayor Jack Bolton told Atlanta Journal-Constitution Reporter Steve Visser. “We don’t want to have dance clubs, party clubs or bars. If it means being made fun of because we don’t allow karaoke, that’s fine, too.”

Lilburn’s liquor laws only allow “passive entertainment,” such as television, Visser wrote. That means pool tables, poker machines, and karaoke are out, under the police chief’s and city government’s view.
“Evidently they don’t even want to encourage singing and laughter,” said attorney Mike Puglise, who is representing the Sports Fan pub. “They want their citizens to be somber when they eat their meals.”
Lilburn is in Gwinnett County, which is known for book censorship in the public school system and Runaway Bride Jennifer Wilbanks.
