what does being an editor in chief entail?
Just wondering how close to real life ‘Devil Wears Prada’ is! & what exactly does being the editor in chief entail? (& don’t just say “they edit the magazine” because we all know the obvious…)
Basically, if someone could send me sort of a job description of an editor in chief of a FASHION magazine that would be great.
Like a lot of job titles, it will have different meanings in different organisations and different countries. The industry sector doesn’t really matter here, the following could be true whether it’s a newspaper, fashion magazine or whatever.
The following possibilities encompass what the title usually means:
1. They are in overall charge of more than one title. So, for eg, 3 fashion magazines may have their own editors, with one editor in chief who oversees all the publications, taking more responsibility for strategic issues
2. It may mean exactly the same as ‘editor’ but that company uses the rather grander title.
3. It can signify someone who’s less ‘hands-on’ than an editor. Sometimes someone is made editor in chief in the countdown to retirement, for eg, to show they are still involved with the publication while a new editor establishes themselves – often important where the editor has to have a high profile
4. It can signify someone with more management responsibilities than a ‘normal’ editor. Editors are not usually in charge of advertising staff, capital budgets etc. This title might be used to show that someone also has these responsibilities
