Free online newspaper help?

My school starts on September 8th. Over the summer, I had to read two books for my Honors English. One of them was Of Mice and Men. Part of the assignment was to write an article review on each of the books. I need to find an article on the internet that was originally in a magazine or newspaper, but on most online newspaper sites, like The New York Times, the archives in which I need to search cost money. I need to present a social issue in my article review, and I was thinking racism or civil rights, so I need the archives because they show articles that the newspaper had posted in the past. Does anyone know any newspaper sites with free archives that I can find my article from? I’m getting desperate.
