Question for current Journalists.?
I am a junior in high school and I plan to study News-Editorial Journalism at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
I was just curious on how I can improve my writing. I think I’m going to subscribe to a couple magazines focused on what I want to do. Any suggestions for those? I’m looking into Sports or Lifestyle publications. What should I be doing now to get better. What kind of topics should I practice writing on? For sports, I think just coverage of games. What about Lifestyle? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank You.
LOL Kels, didn’t I just write about your school newspaper idea?
Don’t worry about WHAT to write about yet, just WRITE. In journalism you really learn by DOING. Journalism writing is the same no matter what you are writing about. Wait until you get out of college to decide what to specialize in.
Any editor worth his salt will want to see WHAT you have written, the field doesn’t really matter…if you have the “flair” for writing sports, you’ll have it for features and for lifestyle sections. On the other hand, if you don’t have the flair for writing, it’s probably a good idea to find that out as soon as possible, because, in my experience, “flair” is not something that can be taught.
