There are several types of telemarketing scams doing the rounds these days. Some telemarketers call you and engage you in a scam, while others make you call and willingly bite the bait. Magazine subscriptions are another form of telemarketing scam and many people are getting cheated. The saddest part is that they wait for the magazines to arrive in the mail and nothing turns up. Here is how it typically works.
You get a call from a telemarketer offering you various magazine subscriptions. They make the offers sound so real that you think they are for real. They give you many choices of magazines and subscriptions. They also explain the plans at length. They are also nice enough to give you deals, discounts and sometimes free subscriptions.
So when you do get a call listen to the telemarketer. There are some techniques that scammers try. Some scammers never let you know the total costs and tell you that it costs only a few dollars. This is one typical clue that the offer is a fraud.
Some scammers record the calls to have your verbal agreement to buy the magazine subscription. In some states, a verbal agreement is as good as the real agreement to purchase. So be careful of what you utter over the phone. Basically, you should be refusing to take the magazine subscription and getting off the call. Make sure you say that at the end of the call.
Also, never give your billing address because then the scammer has access to your financial information. Be careful on what kind of information you give over the phone.
