stress about choosing a major for college?
I’m only 15 year old sophomore who’s parents are stressing me out to chose figure out what i want to be in the future. I honestly don’t know and I keep changing my mind a lot. First I wanted to be a pharmacist, then I wanted to be a photographer for magazines or newspaper, then I wanted to be work in the filming industries for movies and stuff, then I wanted to be a author, then I wanted to be a teacher for elementary teachers because I read in a magazine that in the future it will be one of the most upcoming careers and now I’m stuck. I don’t even know if I want to go to college because I don’t want to waste my parents money on not knowing what to choose as a major. Please help me.
Your parents need to lighten up. (But you already knew that.) Many, many, many students start college without having chosen a major and many of those who go in “knowing” what they want to major in change their minds after they start college.
As you start thinking more specifically about colleges to apply to (18 months from now), look at schools that offer a fairly large variety of undergraduate programs and majors. That way, when you DO decide what to major in, you have a good chance of finding it at the college you’re attending, rather than one you have to transfer to.
I would suggest your parents consult this short guide for sophomores from the College Board web site: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/plan/action/sophomores.html. You’ll notice – and I hope they do, too – that nowhere in this guide does it say “choose your major for college” or “choose a career path”. (There are similar guides at College Board’s web site for juniors and seniors.) What you should be doing now is preparing to get into college, not deciding what you’ll be doing 6+ years from now when you finish college.
