magazine media kit sample
Selling magazine ads without a magazine…?

I am starting a magazine. I want to start selling ads, but I do not have the physical magazine. I thought about making a sample magazine. What do you think? I plan on having a media kit.

If you have worked in this industry any advice is greatly appreciated.

Having a mock-up of your first edition will make your life so much easier. It’s likely to be difficult to sell to advertisers without it. It will also help you (and your staff) get a feel for the style you’re intending to create, and will help you solve any production issues way before the first edition proper is ready to print.

The Media Kit is a MUST. Your advertisers will want to know things like how many copies you intend to distribute, where, the kind of reader you are aiming at, etc. The more information you can provide, the better your chances of getting the sale.

Try to sign advertisers for a minimum of three months if you can. It saves time on your part, but it will also build momentum and exposure for the advertiser. A one-off ad is time-consuming for you and is unlikely to provide an instant result for your clients. Maybe offer a ‘buy three – get one free’ enticement for your first four issues?

Don’t expect to hook the national advertisers in your first issue. Many have policies that prevent advertising in new publications. Start small and aim for the sorts of businesses that are most likely to benefit from advertising in your magazine.

Good luck.
