Why do you have to have a prescription of Retin A?

I think it’s stupid because not all people can get it (either because their insurance won’t cover it, or in my case, parents won’t let me go to a dermatologist) I did a lot of research on it before realizing you couldn’t get it without a prescription. I have acne and I’ve had it recommended for my skin type by quizzes and article in magazine and online. It would be perfect for my skin and I think it’s what could finally clear my skin and make it look bright and pretty for once. I get pus-filled zits (gross, I know) I absolutely hate it.
What’s your view on why you have to have a prescription?
Have you used it or anything like it? If so, how did it work?
Thanks

i went to a dermatologist up until i was about 17 and they finally gave me something that actually worked, acutane…but until then they’d prescribed for me retin-a of various degrees of reactivity. and it’s a GOOD thing that you have to wait for a prescription because that stuff was not meant for humans. lol. it basicallly burns the skin off your face. that’s putting it harshly, but my face would burn, because it acts as an extreme exfoliant. i wouldn’t reccommend it personally, unless your doctor (when you get one) first told you how you needed to use it. you think it might help, but the thing is that you have to balance it out with hydrocortizone, which acts to soothe the burn. so if you have crusty skin that is festering in pimples, retin a is good because it will dry those up and remove the layers of skin until they’re gone, but it’s just….a beast. and a frickin pain.
