Newsletter and magazine covers – Design Considerations for publishers
Coverage is the first impression is a potential reader a magazine Newsletter or journal. His reaction to the determination of coverage if your product will be bought or read.
In this article I refer in particular to cover products sold from reviewer. But you can ask most of my comments to those made by the postal service, or sent in ezines.
The main business objective is to cover potential readers to pick it up – The first step in the process of acquisition. Whatever the cover must be judged by this simple criterion: it will bring the reader to reach for the book?
Styles are high. But any halfway decent creative to meet the business objective and at the same time, to the deck when close.
A lid has five main elements:
- Logo name
- Format
- Concealment image
- Cover-lines
- Color
Get the five on the right and has a product that distinguishes and irresistible pick-me-up.
Logo name
You name I have for the title that appears on the cover. Usually consists of just the name of a special police. This is what you call a logo-name, because it is the primary identifier of product and, as all logos should be memorable and instantly recognizable.
Make it easy to read. The easiest, most simple forms is more understandable and easy to remember and easier to recognize. It is especially when there are other factors to identify the product, as their formatting or images on the cover. Logo rich graphical name, which the designer has started in the ways of the police, to be used for periodicals, such as academic journals, have no images in their covers.
Having a space around the original logo. Should be represented in a space of their own, because if it is surrounded by a large number of elements of its importance as identification is reduced.
The position of the logo, name on the cover will depend on how they should be distributed. When a commercial product that will be placed on a shelf for magazines, then the name of the logo should be in the top left cover, so it will be visible when other journals that overlap in the stand. If you are a newsletter that is delivered by mail or email, the position of the logo, name it is so crucial and some variation is possible, according to the expectations of its readers.
The format of the coverage
The format should be standard because, as the logo of the name is an identifier. In fact, standardized coverage make the product more quickly recognizable, which is vital for a trade magazine. Standardization also provides an easy to produce greater coverage.
However, do not turn the format into a straightjacket. Let your designer depart from the place where it makes sense point of view the main objective of business coverage – for potential readers to the magazine.
Images covered
These are the hooks. The pictures on the cover should attract attention and arouse curiosity. You must use different images for each number – Distinguishing the problems of others – but at the same time, the images should be similar stylistically to identify the magazine and went to other labels.
Cover-lines
The words on the cover in place to attract the reader on the subject. Are perhaps the most important coverage.
Cover lines should be intriguing, arousing curiosity, and to convey messages about good content. Above all, they must be included with a high speed scanning. Therefore:
- Keep it simple – readers do not care what they say but how they are luxurious;
- Make the time to transmit the message;
- Use Cases minor because it saves space and reads faster;
- Do not use capital letters for a wide range of these is difficult to read, and
- Do not give all the words in capital letters or you'll be forced the reader's eye high jump all over line.
You also need to distance the viewer into account. A product sold from a shelf magazine coverage must be visible from a distance. No matter if your product to be delivered to an e-wrapper or viewed on a monitor.
Because it should not compete with cover images, black or white cover lines are the best – Which brings us to the last element: color.
Color
The use of color for their coverage, to distinguish the crowd. Look at the titles in the areas where rival Sell will be sold and choose a color that prevents the cover away of others. If the rival magazines bright colors, try black and white.
View in context
Lastly, are models and examine the design of its coverage in the context in which the buyer to see the target.
You can:
(A place) model among others in a magazine rack;
(B) put on a low table from a host of other magazines,
(C) hide the dummy in the Inbox or in a heap spam.
Does the model attention? Is it the irresistible pick-me-up? The title is clearly visible and recognizable? Is the online coverage of the main story is taken?
The answers you look at the front and its designer.
