In the constitution, what does this mean?
Article 1 Section 4:
17. District of Columbia: To exercise exclusive Legislation in all cases whatsoever, over such District(not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislation of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-yards, and other needful Buildings;-And
This is the article that sets Washington DC as the seat of the US government … and gives the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government the powers (within limits) to acquire and use land within this area for whatever purpose they deem necessary for the conduct of Federal business.
